Before you spend time learning about KEDIT for Windows, you should be aware of the current status of the product:
KEDIT is at this point a "legacy product", kept available and supported on a very limited basis, primarily for the benefit of existing users, and we are no longer actively working on new upgrades or features for KEDIT. We discourage purchases of KEDIT by new users or organizations not already familiar with the program.
However, because organizations that already use KEDIT, as well as KEDIT users who change jobs, etc., may have a continuing need for additional KEDIT licenses, we plan to continue selling KEDIT through our web site until at least the end of 2025.
We plan to provide e-mail technical support for KEDIT, although on a very limited, part-time basis, until at least June 2026. Our support is now focused on KEDIT for Windows running on 64-bit versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11. and any new maintenance releases of KEDIT for Windows are expected to require a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or Windows 11, Our support e-mail address is support@kedit.com.
KEDIT for Windows is Mansfield Software Group’s text editor for Windows 10 and Windows 11. (KEDIT for Windows itself is a 32-bit program, and there is currently no 64-bit version of the program, but it runs on and is supported on 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and 11.) It provides many powerful and useful facilities for working with text files. KEDIT is typically used to edit computer programs, notes and memos, e-mail, lists of information, and other textual data files.
This page gives general information about KEDIT for Windows.
KEDIT for Windows is a full-featured Windows text editor with menus, toolbars, drag-and-drop editing, clipboard access and Multiple Document Interface (MDI) support. Editing features include sophisticated search and replace facilities, full undo and redo, a sort facility, a redefinable keyboard, regular expression support and file locking support. Full documentation is supplied as both online help and as manuals in PDF-format files.
Dozens of options let you tailor the interface to suit your preferences, so you can pick the combination of features that work best for you. You can use the mouse, menus, and dialog boxes to access the power of KEDIT or, if you prefer, you can use the keyboard and the command line.
KEDIT's syntax coloring facility highlights comments, strings, and keywords in a variety of languages, including HTML, COBOL, dBase, FORTRAN and PASCAL. Especially helpful is KEDIT's use of different colors to highlight different levels of parentheses, braces, and nested keywords. Syntax coloring is user configurable, so you can add your own keywords, and even add support for additional languages.
KEDIT offers many of the commands and features of XEDIT, the editor used with IBM’s CMS system. KEDIT adapts XEDIT’s features to the Windows environment, so that former XEDIT users are immediately at home, and PC users have access to XEDIT’s powerful command set. KEDIT has over 100 XEDIT-compatible commands and SET options, and supports an XEDIT-style prefix area and screen layout.
Built into KEDIT is a large subset of IBM’s REXX language. This flexible macro language makes it easy to redefine the keyboard and automate common editing tasks. Macros can be run from the KEDIT command line or from the KEDIT toolbar, assigned to keys, or activated by the mouse. You can replace any of the default key definitions with your own macros, putting the power of REXX at your fingertips.
This is one of KEDIT's most popular features. The selective editing facility lets you focus on a subset of the lines in a file, such as all lines containing a particular string. You can have KEDIT display only this subset of your file, and you can perform editing operations that affect only this subset. You can then return to viewing and working with the entire file, with the lines in the selected subset (as modified by your editing) remaining in their original position in the file.
KEDIT provides a wide range of facilities for working with column-oriented data. Features like column marking, boundary marking, and multiple verify ranges make it easy to view your data. You can move, copy, sort, shift, uppercase, or lowercase columns of data, and you can view, insert, delete, search for, and replace text in particular columns.
You can easily tailor KEDIT to suit your editing needs and preferences. You can change dozens of KEDIT default settings and options, and you can save the settings that work best for you so that they are automatically executed whenever you start KEDIT. Here’s just some of what you can do:
